What is Sakeng ?

Sakeng is a Sesotho phrase meaning ‘kraal’. A kraal is a symbol of community, protection, health and wealth. It represents our shared strength.

It is from this ethos of using and controlling our shared strength that Sakeng was born. Sakeng is a community owned platform that allows retailers to  reward to our members, protects their interests as consumers and promotes economic transformation and inclusion.

Sakeng Emporium is the first neutral platform of its kind, our goal is to create a platform that places the consumer and his or her needs in the centre.

How does Sakeng achieve its goals ?

Sakeng Emporium belongs to you, it will connect you to multiple retailers and service providers. With you as the owner we can ensure that your data, privacy and instructions are always protected and honoured.

All we need is your support and a small portion of your time. Just think how wonderful it will be if one day you only need one card in your wallet that connects to thousands of retailers and service providers?

You say Sakeng is a consumer advocacy platform, please explain?

One of the main objectives of Sakeng is to help create better outcomes for the consumer. By using our platform and our unity we can connect you with better deals, more rewards and provide access to exciting products and tools.

How will Sakeng help me to increase my ownership in the economy?

Through the unique structure created to govern and manage Sakeng and its related companies, we ensure that the benefits generated by our members and partners go back into their pockets.

80% of all value created by the platform is shared with our members and the remaining 20% is shared with our distribution partners.

 

You have an interesting logo, what does it represent ?

The logo was developed around the well known Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. These needs are physiological, safety and security, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization. This means our need to eat, be clothed, feeling safe and secure, feeling loved and as if we belong, our self -esteem and reaching our full potential.

There are many that say that there is a missing sixth level- this level is self -transcendence. The circle or ‘kraal ‘in the logo represents this sixth level. Self-transcendence is where we act not just in our own interest but also in the interest of the greater community.

Who started Sakeng and provided the initial funding ?

Two years ago, six people got together  and started dreaming about a world in which they could give something back to the men and women who fuel the economy and help them to build their respective businesses.

These founders realised that in modern times the only tool that can do this at scale and touch the lives of millions of people, is technology. They joined forces with a technology group and several philanthropists to raise the funding required to make the dream a reality. Their main goal was that Sakeng Emporium should be owned by the consumer and work for the consumer.

How will Sakeng make money and remain sustainable ?

The funding received from the founders and early philanthropists is enough to get Sakeng Emporium going and help it through its early years. Over time we hope that more donors will support the Sakeng initiative to help us extend and improve the platform. We will also cover our running costs from small transactions fees levied on certain types of transactions and services.

Who is running Sakeng ?

Sakeng is a group effort. Currently we have four trustees who provide their time on a voluntary basis to help oversee the running and management of the various  Sakeng entities. We hope to extend the number of trustees to six over time and will appoint more people in the underlying businesses as we get traction and generate the required income through the platform.

Is Sakeng a Non-Profit Organization ?

No. The Sakeng entities are normal (Pty)Ltd companies except for the Sakeng Trust. These companies are supposed to create value for their members and partners.

To ensure that no external party use it for their personal gain the structure has been designed in a manner that ensures that all value generated is trapped in the Sakeng ecosystem and shared with our members and partners.

When was Sakeng founded ?

The idea of Sakeng was born in 2017. It took some time to raise funds and secure the relevant partners to help us build the platform. Development of the platform started on a part time basis from early 2018 and became more full time as our donations and funding increased.

Sakeng is new, why should I take the risk of joining ?

We worked hard to raise funding to allow us to offer a free platform to our members which implies that there is no financial risk in joining the platform. To change the world takes courage and commitment but united we can bring about this change.

Sakeng belongs to you, it’s mandate is to further the interest of its members and partners. Our plea is that you take a leap of faith and trust us, looking back you will be remembered as a pioneer who helped to shape the world and community you live in.

What is a Sakeng Member ?

Any person living in South Africa can become a Sakeng member. The members will enjoy the benefits and rewards that the Sakeng platform offers. They own 80% of Sakeng Investment Corporation whose mandate it is to help grow the value of the Sakeng community.

How do I become a member of Sakeng ?

You can either download our app from the Apple AppStore or Google Playstore and enrol yourself, use our USSD short codes or sign up at a distribution outlet. For more details on where to find a distribution outlet please visit our website (sakeng.co.za).

Do I have to pay a monthly Membership fee ?

No. Sakeng Emporium membership is free, there is no compulsory subscription fees and there will never be. All you need to unlock YOUR share of the value created, is the courage to join and the willingness to spend some of your time on the platform.

What are the benefits of becoming a Sakeng Member ?

Can I cancel my membership, if I change my mind ?

Yes, you can cancel your membership at any time,  just call our call centre on 0860 725364(SAKENG) or deactivate your membership via our mobile or USSD applications.

Do I benefit if I get my friends and family to also join Sakeng ?

A unique reference code is given to all Sakeng members to share with their  friends and family, so the more of your friends and family use your code when they sign up the more Sakas you will receive, Sakas in turn will increase your share in Sakeng Emporium.

How do I install the Sakeng Member App ?

Visit either the Google PlayStore or Apple AppStore and search for Sakeng then select download or get. After the download and installation is complete, fill in the form and you will be part of the Sakeng community!

What can I do with the Sakeng Member App ?

Our Sakeng Member App will have incredible features which can be used to make your life as a consumer easier and give you access to great rewards and discounts offered by our retail network. Explore the various features on offer and start using those that match your lifestyle and needs. As we sign up more retail partners you will receive vouchers and other rewards based on the rules determined by the retail partners.

Do I need to have a Sakeng number to register for the Sakeng Member App

No. Sakeng members can belong to any mobile network. Being a Sakeng Mobile customer will just give you access to additional benefits and rewards.

Can I register for the Member app using two different numbers ?

No. Your mobile number is also your account number in the Sakeng Emporium platform. Each customer should only have one active account. You will be allowed to change your account number by following the relevant process should you change mobile numbers in future.

Why do you need to know my identity for me to become a full Member ?

For Sakeng to work the way we intended it to work, each consumer should have just one membership contract. This allows us to combine rewards and benefits from many retail partners into a single rewards platform. In order to ensure that we do not create duplicate records for you we need to verify your identity.

Certain benefits we are working on will also require that we can ensure that the benefits are given to the correct person, this will prevent fraudsters from stealing your benefits.

Can I register for the Full Membership using my driver's license?

Not at this stage, our current process requires either a national identity document or passport.

I downloaded the Member App and I need assistance, what must I do ?

Please contact our call centre on 135 if you are a Sakeng Mobile member or 0860 725649(SAKENG) if you are with another network. We will gladly assist.

Who do I contact if I forgot the number I used to register for my App?

I have a new cell number, how do I update my account to use the new number?

Log into the mobile or USSD app and select the profile and setting option. Follow the prompts provided. Please contact our call centre on 135 if you are a Sakeng Mobile member or 0860 725649(SAKENG) if you are with another network if you need assistance.

What are Sakeng Emporium vouchers ?

The vouchers  awarded or bought on the platform are simply electronic shopping vouchers. Given that Sakeng Emporium is a neutral platform owned by its members we can store vouchers from many retailers on one platform.

Vouchers are either be awarded or bought and can be used to buy any goods in the Sakeng Emporium retail network.

There are different voucher types each with its own special rules and feature such as where you can use them, when you can use them, what you can spend them on and how long they are valid for.

What are Sakeng Emporium Coupons?

Coupons are normally given to members by product manufacturers or retail partners and have a face value linked to a specific product. Only when you buy the specific product at one of the listed retail partners do you receive the value at point of sale. Example you could get a R2 coupon that will give you R2 discount when you buy 2L Coke.

Can I link my Credit and Debit card to my Member App?

Yes. We have an option where you can capture your card details against your membership. We then create a secure token on our side and the card details is stored with one of the large banks.

Once the token is linked you will be able to use the card in future without capturing your card details again. None of your card details will ever be stored on the Sakeng Emporium platform.

I see this thing called Sakas, what is it ?

Sakas is an internal unit that we created in Sakeng Emporium. You earn them by spending time on the various elements and features in the platform. The more Sakas you accumulate the bigger your share of the value generated by the platform will be.

Sakas cannot be bought they can only be earned with YOUR participation on the platform. The way Sakas are earned ensures that every person can have an equal chance of increasing their share of the Sakeng Emporium irrespective of how much money they have.

Sakas can also not be sold or transferred to other people. To build value in any business venture takes time and requires patience, Sakas are your long-term benefit for being a member of Sakeng Emporium. To ensure that you and your family continue to benefit from your loyalty to the platform after your death, you will have an option to bequeath your Sakas to a beneficiary of your choice.

How do I earn Sakas ?

The more time you spend interacting with the platform, the more Sakas you earn. Different activities or events will earn you different numbers of Sakas.

To help you get used to how Sakas work we created a fun option on our mobile app where you can earn Sakas by just giving us a bit of YOUR time and focus. Once you activate your full membership you will have many more ways to earn Sakas.

What is the difference between a Pre-paid Account and Mobile contract?

Given that all the products on our platform are prepaid you need to first put money in the platform before you can purchase virtual products such as airtime, vouchers and many more.

Once you have loaded money in your account you will be able to buy airtime and vouchers. The vouchers can then be used at our retail partners to buy other goods and services.

Please note that once you have loaded money in your prepaid account you cannot request for it to be paid out to you again. The money must be spent on goods and services in our retail network. It is important to understand that your Sakeng pre-paid account is not bank account or an e-wallet.

The Sakeng Mobile contract allows you to load pre-paid airtime on the contract and then decide whether you want to buy data or voice bundles with your airtime. You cannot use the pre-paid airtime to buy any other goods or service on our platform.

What is a Sakeng Partner ?

Sakeng partners are businesses, organizations and sole proprietors who provide products and services to the members of Sakeng Emporium. Partners can play many different roles on our platform such as offering rewards, distributing and reselling our products, become a donor, advertising to our members, providing product information, accepting voucher and coupon redemption and more.

Sakeng Emporium is a platform that connects partners and members. Distribution partners who help us to enrol members will share in the value created by the Sakeng platform, they jointly own 20% of Sakeng Investment Corporation and will also receive other benefits and recognition.

How will partners access the Sakeng Emporium platform ?

Partners can access the platform via our Sakeng Partner portal at sakeng.co.za and, where applicable, through the Sakeng Retail-Point mobile app available on both the Google Playstore and the Apple AppStore.

Who qualifies to be a Sakeng sales rep? And what are the requirements?

What is Sakeng mobile ?

Sakeng Mobile is the first community owned mobile network in South Africa. Sakeng Mobile is 100% owned by Sakeng Investment Corporation which in turn shares 80% of its proceeds with Sakeng Members and the remaining 20% with the Sakeng Distribution partners.

Sakeng Mobile is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator and runs on the Cell-C mobile network. Sakeng Mobile offers some of the best deals in South Africa to pre-paid consumers from all walks of life. You can conveniently manage your Sakeng Mobile sims via our web portal at sakeng.co.za or via our Sakeng mobile app available on the Google Playstore and Apple AppStore.

The more members we have that join Sakeng mobile the bigger our discounts will be from the networks which means lower data and voice rates for all.

How do I get a Sakeng sim ?

You can get a  Sakeng sim from any Sakeng distributor. Visit our website on sakeng.co.za to find a distribution outlet near you.

Sakeng is still a young platform and we are working hard to extend the distribution network to more partners to make it easier for you to sign up.

This is a new mobile network, how do I know it will work ?

Sakeng has been testing their network and processes for the past 12 months. To date we have signed up more than 10 000 pilots users. Given that it is a prepaid network you have nothing to lose by signing up, if you do not like what we offer you can always just port back to your existing network.

Remember the most important thing, Sakeng Mobile belongs to YOU! If just 10% of all South Africans were to join Sakeng Mobile YOU would be a shareholder in a multi-billion-rand business!

Just Imagine what would happen if all South Africans were to join Sakeng Mobile…it would herald a new era of consumer driven and owned commerce.

Does Sakeng mobile have coverage across South Africa ?

Yes. Sakeng Mobile runs on the Cell-C network as it’s primary network. Through Cell-C’s partnership with MTN the Cell-C network is now more comprehensive than ever. Should you still have signal problems Cell-C also has a roaming agreement with Vodacom in certain areas where neither Cell-C nor MTN has coverage.

What makes Sakeng mobile different ?

Sakeng Mobile is owned by our members. Given that YOU are the owner of the network you would expect that it should work for you and give you the best possible deals and outcomes.

Because Sakeng mobile is owned by our members, we focus on building products and benefits that truly have our member’s interest at heart. Sakeng Mobile applies the following principles in designing our products:

  • Maximum flexibility in how you apply your airtime. You always load airtime then decide which voice and data bundles you want to buy.
  • Every consumer gets a great deal, not just the ones with lots of money to spend. You will see that our entry level voice and data bundles are some of the most competitive in the market.
  • No premium services are allowed on the Sakeng Mobile network. This means that no external  supplier will sneak in to collect money from you.
  • Our smallest bundles are valid for 30 days and our large bundles are all valid for 90 days. We  will not sell you bundles that we know you will not use.
  • As we grow our volumes, and in return get better rates from the networks, we will share these discounts with the members who helped us earn it.
  • When Sakeng Mobile make any profits and declare a dividend in the future 100% of that dividend is shared with our members (80%) and distribution partners (20%).

Can I port from my existing prepaid mobile network to Sakeng mobile ?

Yes, our distribution agents will explain the process to you when they sign you up. For more info please email us at service@sakeng.co.za or call us 0860 725964(SAKENG) or 135 if you are already on the Sakeng Mobile network.

Can I port from an existing mobile contract to Sakeng mobile ?

It would normally be in your best interest to first let your existing contract expire after which you can sign up with Sakeng Mobile with your existing number. We do not offer an incentives or help with cancellation penalties when you port to Sakeng Mobile.

What will happen to my existing airtime , data and SMS bundles when I port to Sakeng ?

Sadly, you will forfeit your airtime, data and SMS bundles because you are porting to a different service provider. Make sure you use up bulk of it or transfer it to a friend prior to moving to Sakeng Mobile.

How do I activate International Roaming ?

Please call our call centre agent 135 or 0860 725364(SAKENG).

How do I get my GPS/MMS settings ?

Access our USSD service by calling *138#:

  • Select option 2 (self service)
  • Select option 2 (data settings)
  • A SMS will be sent to you please follow the instructions and if you still cannot get your GPS/MMS settings please contact our call centre agents on 135 or 0860  725364(SAKENG)

Will my Sakeng sim work if I use it in a router ?

Yes, just make sure you have data bundle loaded.

How do I recharge my Sakeng mobile sim ?

There are numerous ways in which you can recharge your Sakeng Mobile sim:

  • You can buy a Cell C airtime voucher then use the following USSD option to load it, press *102*voucher number#
  • You can buy airtime on our web or mobile platform via debit or credit card. You receive extra bonus airtime if you use our self-service channels.
  • You can pay money into your Sakeng prepaid account via debit or credit card or EFT and use the prepaid funds to buy airtime.
  • You can use a voucher you earned on Sakeng Emporium to buy airtime.
  • You can ask a friend who is also a Sakeng Mobile member to transfer airtime to you and refund them in cash.
  • You can buy Sakeng airtime from any distribution partner representative.

Over time we hope to roll Sakeng over to more retailers which will allow you to buy Sakeng airtime directly at participating stores.

Can I buy data directly from my Sakeng App ?

Yes, you can buy data, SMS and voice bundles using your Sakeng app or by dialing *138# and using the USSD menu.

Can I use my Sakeng app to buy airtime for other mobile networks ?

Yes, you can use your app to buy airtime and data bundles for other networks. This will only be available for members who have signed up for the full membership. You will also receive a share of the commission we earn.

How do I buy data and SMS bundles after loading my airtime voucher ?

Access our USSD menu by dialing *138#:

  • Select option 1(covert airtime) select the following for any one  you follow the easy instructions depending on what you want to buy.

How do I check my available airtime, data and SMS bundles ?

Access our USSD menu by dialing *138#, you will be able to see all your available airtime, data, SMS and minutes on the first screen.

Will my sim use my airtime after my data has ran out data ?

The default option is that it will. If  you do not want this behavior, please access our USSD menu by dialing *147#:

  • Select option 3 (data management )
  • Select option 2 ( stop using airtime for data )
  • Press 1 to agree

 

Will my unused data bundles rollover to the next month ?

No, you will need to follow the below steps to achieve this.

Access the USSD menu by entering *147#:

  • Select option 3 (data management)
  • Select option 4 ( data rollover)
  • Select the bundle you want to roll over. This will only work if you have bundles that qualify for roll over.

How long are the Sakeng data bundles valid for ?

Our small bundles, 25 MB to 250 MB, are valid for 30 days. Our large bundles, 500 MB and bigger, are valid for 90 days.

Can I use the App without data?

Yes, for Sakeng Mobile customers the app will only use data to download from the relevant app store but not when you use it. Customers on other mobile networks will need to have data available.

Can I transfer airtime and data to another Sakeng Mobile Member ?

Yes.

To transfer airtime, follow the below steps:

  • Dial *138#
  • Select option 1 ( airtime and data management )
  • Select option 2 (Transfer ) -> airtime transfer.

You can transfer a minimum of R2 airtime, and you can only transfer to a Sakeng registered mobile number.

To transfer data:

  • Dial *147#
  • Select option 3 (data management )
  • Select option 3 (transfer data )

OR

  • Dial *138#
  • Select option 1 (airtime and data )
  • Select option 2 (transfer data )
  • Select option 2 (data transfer )

How do I send a PLEASE CALL ME ?

Dial *111*cell number#

What can I do if my Sakeng Sim gets lost or stolen ?

Please contact our call centre agents at 135 or 0860 725364(SAKENG).

Can I get more than one sim card ?

Yes, you can have more than one sim card but you will only have one Sakeng Emporium membership number.

How do I activate my voice mail ?

Dial 132 and follow the instructions.

Will I be charged if I transfer data bundles ?

For now you can only transfer to another Sakeng Mobile member free of charge.

Can I purchase universal data bundles ?

Unfortunately, no but you can buy your Cell-C airtime voucher, dial *138# then convert your airtime into data.

How do I access the Sakeng platform if I do not have a smart phone ?

If you are a Sakeng Mobile customer, you can use our USSD number *138# or access out online platform at sakeng.co.za. If you are a customer on another mobile network you can use our universal USSD number *120*88086#.

Sakeng is a group effort. Currently we have four trustees who provide their time on a voluntary basis to help oversee the running and management of the various  Sakeng entities. No. Sakeng members can belong to any mobile network. Being a Sakeng Mobile customer will just give you access to additional benefits and rewards.

No. Your mobile number is also your account number in the Sakeng Emporium platform. Each customer should only have one active account. You will be allowed to change your account number by following the relevant process should you change mobile numbers in future.

For Sakeng to work the way we intended it to work, each consumer should have just one membership contract. This allows us to combine rewards and benefits from many retail partners into a single rewards platform. In order to ensure that we do not create duplicate records for you we need to verify your identity.

Certain benefits we are working on will also require that we can ensure that the benefits are given to the correct person, this will prevent fraudsters from stealing your benefits.

The vouchers  awarded or bought on the platform are simply electronic shopping vouchers. Given that Sakeng Emporium is a neutral platform owned by its members we can store vouchers from many retailers on one platform.

Vouchers are either be awarded or bought and can be used to buy any goods in the Sakeng Emporium retail network.

There are different voucher types each with its own special rules and feature such as where you can use them, when you can use them, what you can spend them on and how long they are valid for.

Coupons are normally given to members by product manufacturers or retail partners and have a face value linked to a specific product. Only when you buy the specific product at one of the listed retail partners do you receive the value at point of sale. Example you could get a R2 coupon that will give you R2 discount when you buy 2L Coke.

Yes. We have an option where you can capture your card details against your membership. We then create a secure token on our side and the card details is stored with one of the large banks.

Once the token is linked you will be able to use the card in future without capturing your card details again. None of your card details will ever be stored on the Sakeng Emporium platform.

Sakas is an internal unit that we created in Sakeng Emporium. You earn them by spending time on the various elements and features in the platform. The more Sakas you accumulate the bigger your share of the value generated by the platform will be.

Sakas cannot be bought they can only be earned with YOUR participation on the platform. The way Sakas are earned ensures that every person can have an equal chance of increasing their share of the Sakeng Emporium irrespective of how much money they have.

Sakas can also not be sold or transferred to other people. To build value in any business venture takes time and requires patience, Sakas are your long-term benefit for being a member of Sakeng Emporium. To ensure that you and your family continue to benefit from your loyalty to the platform after your death, you will have an option to bequeath your Sakas to a beneficiary of your choice.

The more time you spend interacting with the platform, the more Sakas you earn. Different activities or events will earn you different numbers of Sakas.

To help you get used to how Sakas work we created a fun option on our mobile app where you can earn Sakas by just giving us a bit of YOUR time and focus. Once you activate your full membership you will have many more ways to earn Sakas.

Given that all the products on our platform are prepaid you need to first put money in the platform before you can purchase virtual products such as airtime, vouchers and many more.

Once you have loaded money in your account you will be able to buy airtime and vouchers. The vouchers can then be used at our retail partners to buy other goods and services.

Please note that once you have loaded money in your prepaid account you cannot request for it to be paid out to you again. The money must be spent on goods and services in our retail network. It is important to understand that your Sakeng pre-paid account is not bank account or an e-wallet.

The Sakeng Mobile contract allows you to load pre-paid airtime on the contract and then decide whether you want to buy data or voice bundles with your airtime. You cannot use the pre-paid airtime to buy any other goods or service on our platform.

Sakeng partners are businesses, organizations and sole proprietors who provide products and services to the members of Sakeng Emporium. Partners can play many different roles on our platform such as offering rewards, distributing and reselling our products, become a donor, advertising to our members, providing product information, accepting voucher and coupon redemption and more.

  • You can use a voucher you earned on Sakeng Emporium to buy airtime.
  • You can ask a friend who is also a Sakeng Mobile member to transfer airtime to you and refund them in cash.
  • You can buy Sakeng airtime from any distribution partner representative.
